Over the years, we’ve guided countless travellers across Africa and with every adventure comes a few good questions. From what to pack to how our tours work, we’ve heard them all. Here, we’ve gathered the most common questions and provided clear, helpful answers to make planning your next adventure with Waypoint Adventures even easier.

Waypoint Adventures is a team of accredited guides, planners, and overlanders who live for time on the road. We’ve spent years exploring Southern and East Africa, learning the routes that matter and the ones still worth discovering. Every guide on our team is fully qualified, registered, and trained to handle whatever the bush throws our way. We’ve made the rookie mistakes, found the secret campsites, and learned the lesser-known turn-offs — so you don’t have to. We share all of it with travellers who want their adventures real, unrushed, and properly guided.
We are a self-drive and overlanding tour company. We do not offer bus overlanding tours, hiring of 4×4 vehicles, and we do not drive participants around. Our tour guides guide the tour in their own 4×4 vehicles, while you follow in your own vehicle. You require your own 4×4 (or 2×4 vehicle). We have recommendations on where to hire the necessary vehicles and equipment if you require this service.
A self-drive tour means you drive your own vehicle for the duration of the trip. Unlike bus or guided overlanding tours where participants are passengers, you will be behind the wheel of your own 4×4 (or 2×4) vehicle, following our experienced tour guide in their lead vehicle. This gives you the freedom and adventure of navigating the route yourself while still travelling as part of a guided convoy.
No, you do not have to be experienced in overlanding, safaris or driving a 4×4 vehicle off-road. Your adventure guides have many years of experience and will guide you every step of the way. Many of our guests drive an off-road 4×4 (or 2×4) vehicle for the first time when they go on our adventures. Do not be intimidated by this; it will be an experience you will never forget! We will share and teach as much as we can, and by the end of the tour, you will have forgotten your first day nervousness.
